...Once, it was a summer day, we happened to be in the orchards together. We came out of the alley of cypress and looked out at the fields after the harvest. A thin column of smoke from some distant fire rose above them.

He said then: "This is the look of this land. Something is always burning here... something is always being consumed..."
On Tuesday, May 23, 1967, he was called up at midnight, after having spent the evening with his family. Softly he knocked at the door, kissed his mother and sister, refused to have anybody see him off, and walked over to the highway.
Emmanuel Ronkin died in battle on June 9, 1967, at the Golan Heights.
