...His personality glows in his pictures like the sun. Emmanuel lived what he created in the deepest sense, as only true creators do, with ardour, enthusiasm and perpetual wonder. When he was sixteen years old he brought me a still-life, smiled bashfully, and understood my slightest hint. He was already a painter then. Even in the first dark, reddish-brown still-lives which he painted as a young boy, there is a rare perfection. His every pictorial idea penetrated deep within him, touched his imagination and was imbued with its strength. Then it became a spiritual necessity and a painting. Only a true artist creates in this way. This is the source of his fantastic figures, of his rock-like strength. This is what enabled him to stand on the side-lines.

For in his painting there is nothing of the public manifesto. Therefore he belongs to those special, lonely few with whom the history of art sometimes cannot cope, because they stand on the side of the road, like firmly implanted rocks. These few reach the public not through manifestos and schools, but through an inner creation, through a process of purification and distillation. Young though he was, Emmanuel belonged to these lonely few. He was a painter, not a fashionable scribbler. He knew and understood all the styles of contemporary art, but he kept his individuality. And when he sought new colors, new subjects, new landscapes - he found them in his inner source, in personal artistic memories...
